The Earth Haven trilogy

The Cleansing
This is the first novel in the Earth Haven trilogy. I wrote the first draft in nine feverish weeks in spring and early summer of 2013. That’s quite slow by some writers’ standards, but it’s pretty quick by mine as I fit writing around a full-time job.
The ideas which underpin the Earth Haven books were first tentatively explored in a short story written some ten years or more previously: The Third Coming (which, incidentally, can be found in the collection Pond Life). The notion of a deadly plague being spread deliberately by a group composed of individuals who aren’t human, yet have lived amongst us unnoticed for millennia, had kicked around in the dusty recesses of my mind for those ten years. I guess it was time to expel it.

The Beacon
When setting out to write The Cleansing, it quickly became apparent that there was too much story to fit into one reasonably sized volume. I faced a dilemma: write a doorstop or break the tale up into three books. I wanted people to read the story and doubted that readers would take a chance on buying a book the size of a brick written by an unknown. So, a trilogy it was.
By the time I sat down to write the sequel, the first reviews had been coming in for The Cleansing – in the main, extremely positive. For that, of course, I was mightily thankful and relieved, but I then experienced something new: the pressure to produce a sequel that lives up to or surpasses the first volume. It certainly added spice to the writing process. The Beacon is the result.

The Reckoning
The final instalment of the Earth Haven trilogy. The challenge with the final book of a series is to write an ending which is both satisfying and appropriate to what has gone before. The original ending, I knew even as I was writing it, did not achieve either. One of my first readers (my brother) agreed, so I rewrote it. The published version is, I believe, a fitting end to two and a half years of hard, but enjoyable, work.
